Music Spotlight: Beabadoobee

Beatrice Kristi Laus, or Beabadoobee, is a Filipino-British songwriter best known for her alternative-indie rock waves, nostalgic vocals, and raw, vulnerable lyrics.

Born in the Philippines, she moved to London when she was three years old. She grew up listening to pinoy music and 90’s artists such as the Cranberries and Liz Phair ——— some of her mom’s favorites. What shines the most brightly, however, are the psych-rock influences of Kimya Dawson and Elliot Emith.

The first song she wrote, “Coffee”, was recorded in a friend’s bedroom in 2017. This song officially kickstarted her music career; it now has over 100 million plays on Spotify!

So, what draws us to beabadoobee‘s music? Even though Bea is a pretty contemporary artist, her songs have a nostalgic feel that could be easily placed in a Y2K movie. They dive headfirst into the coming-of-age genre, tackling topics such as entering womanhood, self-esteem issues, and falling in love. Many listeners can relate to Bea’s complex and emotional feelings of one’s early 20’s, especially young adult women and teenagers.

My favorite song of beabadoobee is “The Perfect Pair”, released in 2022 under the album “Beatopia”. It draws you in with a bossa-nova-like beat, dainty yet uncertain. The song expresses the lack of communication between two lovers, producing a stagnant, unchanging relationship. Things aren’t working out between them because they’re so similar. Because of this fact, Bea comes to the realization that the things she dislikes about her partner are also a reflection of herself.
