Phantasmic imagery, thought-provoking narratives, chaotic yet structured. These are words which best describe the paintings of contemporary artist, James Jean. Born in Taiwan, Jean grew up in the U.S. and graduated from the School of Visual Arts in New York. He used to be a comic book artist, gaining fame through his cover art for Marvel and D.C. Today, he is a freelance illustrator, either working on personal work or for clients such as Prada, Disney, and Apple. Jean mainly works in acrylic, digital, and ink.

Jean experiments with mixed media, storytelling, and various cultural influences. His work transcends historical genres, thus blending the boundary between Eastern and Western art.

Additionally, Jean’s inspiration comes from a wide variety of backgrounds. His compositions incorporate elements of Japanese woodblock prints, Chinese and Japanese scroll paintings, and renaissance portraiture. Jean blends this set of inspirations into his own delicate style, which is what makes his art so unique.
